You may have heard someone say, “You need to regulate your nervous system.” But what does that actually mean when you are trying to get through your day, take care of your family, or simply feel like yourself again?

At MAVEN & MUSE®, we use nervous system regulation to describe your body’s ability to respond to what is happening and, when the moment has passed, gradually return to a place where you can rest, connect, think clearly, or take your next step. It is a skill we can support, not a demand to feel calm all the time.

Your body has a built in response system

Your autonomic nervous system helps manage things you do not have to think about, including your heart rate and breathing. When something feels demanding or threatening, your body may become more alert. Your heart might beat faster, your muscles may tense, and your attention may narrow. These responses can help you act when action is needed.

Your body also has processes that support rest and recovery. The goal is not to turn off your stress response. It is to have room to move between activity and rest as life changes.

What can feeling unsettled look like?

Sometimes stress feels obvious: a racing heart, shallow breathing, irritability, or the sense that you cannot slow down. Other times you might feel drained, distant, or unable to get started. Those experiences have many possible causes, and they are not a diagnosis on their own.

You do not have to label every sensation to begin caring for yourself. A gentler starting point is: What am I noticing, and what would feel supportive right now?

Regulation does not mean being calm all the time

You can feel sad and still be supported. You can be excited, angry, or overwhelmed without having failed at regulation. The aim is to notice your response and have choices for what comes next.

That might look like pausing before you answer a message, stepping outside for a moment, asking for help, or giving yourself time to recover after a demanding day. Small, repeatable moments count.

A simple place to begin

Try this without forcing anything:

  1. Notice. Feel your feet on the floor or the support of your chair. Look around and name a few things you can see.
  2. Check in. Ask, “Do I need rest, movement, connection, food, water, or a little space?”
  3. Choose one small step. You might soften your shoulders, take a comfortable breath, stretch, or contact someone you trust.

If focusing on your breath feels uncomfortable, skip it. You can keep your eyes open, notice the room, or choose another form of support. There is no single technique that works for every person or every moment.

When extra support matters

Practices like these can help you make space for yourself, but they are not a substitute for medical or mental health care. If symptoms are new, persistent, severe, or interfering with daily life, speak with a qualified clinician. You deserve care that looks at the whole picture.

At MAVEN & MUSE®, nervous system support begins with listening. Through education and our restorative services, we help you build awareness and explore gentle ways to care for your body at your own pace. If you are curious about where to start, explore our nervous system support offerings or book the service that feels right for you.

You do not have to force calm. You can begin by noticing, then choose one kind next step.
